FDA’s plan to ‘phase out’ synthetic food dyes

The Trump administration is bringing down the hammer on synthetic food dyes, but how? FDA Commissioner Marty Makary pledges focus on food, and slams dietary guidelines. Why MAHA is focused on racking up early wins.


Happy Tuesday, and welcome to Food Fix. I had a wonderful and exhausting spring break with my kiddos, but wow, *what a week* to put the newsletter on break. So. Much. Happened. 

Just off the top of my head: Kevin Hall, the top nutrition researcher at NIH, retired early, citing censorship under the Trump administration – a shocking development that basically torched any remaining goodwill that MAHA had with many public health types; Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins attended an event touting Arkansas’ waiver request to ban sugary drinks and candy from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (while also making rotisserie chicken eligible for purchase with SNAP benefits) in the state; HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was in Indiana touting the state’s intention to seek a similar waiver, along with other MAHA-related policies. Speaking of SNAP, both Kennedy and Rollins got into it with the American Beverage Association on X.
